Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is a Southeast Asian island made up of 63 islands. The country is the world's fourth-leading financial center, and its port is one of the five busiest ports in the world. In terms of purchasing power parity, Singapore has the third-highest per capita income in the world.
Singapore economy depends heavily on exports, and like almost the rest of the world, has been hit by the global recession. The government is also trying to steer the economy through an aging population, and high housing costs. Nevertheless, as FT reports, although the country may have a clinical reputation, the ease of doing business combined with a multi-ethnic population has made Singapore diverse, not dull.
One thing to keep in mind -- the country administers caning for many offenses that might seem very minor by the Western standard. So, the advice "when in Rome, do as the Roman's do." should be considered as literal instead of a mere rhetoric.
